Commute

Awake before the sun rises

Ahead of birds and early blessings
Up, up
I prepare to leave
Dragging my stuff and heavy feet
Queues, long lines, and crowded trains
Jeepneys and taxis — I cannot wait
Smoke, dirt, and filth
I breathe in and embrace
Just some of the things I anticipate
This is my daily commute
Off to work
Oh no, I’m gonna be late!

****
Bumabangon bago pa sumikat ang araw
Una pa kaysa pagdaan ng potpot pandesal
Gumising at lumarga
Kahit hirap buhatin ang mga paa
Naghintay, naagawan, nakisiksik
Taxi man o dyip
Sabay sa pagdaan ng sari-saring sasakyan
Langhap-salo ang amoy, usok, at buga
Naubo, nabahin
Bumigat ang ulo’t katawan
Sinimulan ang araw na may sakit
Bunga ng pang araw-araw na hinagpis
Na dala ng trapik.

I 'write' in the shower, like any normal person.
